On Sunday 23rd November I had planned  to showcase my  Mayfair and Belgravia walk  encompassing public houses, casino’s and delightful mews.

The weather could not have been horrendous and I decided to abandon the walk in favour of an interior site the trusted well trodden National Portrait Gallery.

My group listened to my commentary with enthusiasm, good humour, and the weather was long forgotten.  We had lunch at the Audley Pub in Mount Street, whereupon the consensus of opinion it was like a fine gentleman’s club.

A good time had by all!

Some images from our Historic Marylebone Walk which took place on the 7th November 2014.

The walk explored Marylebone, a tasty slice of history sandwiched between two slabs of Georgian new town, to the east the Howard de Walden estate centred on Cavendish Square to the west the Portman estate centred on Portman Square

Once a country village bordering the River Tyburn, Marylebone has become fashionable at the end of the twentieth century when a number of chic boutiques and cafés opened on Marylebone High Street which runs through the centre of the area.

We encompassed the beautiful Royal Academy of Music, Charles Dickens bas relief, the St Marylebone Parish Church where the poets Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning were married on 12 September in 1846.  The medical world of Harley Street and the magnificent Adam brothers Portland Place...we were privileged to see inside 33 Portland Place where the King's Speech was filmed and ending in a small oasis of Cavendish Square.
